Sinus lift: when is it needed

A sinus lift is performed when the bone height under the sinus is too small to stably place an implant in the area of missing upper back teeth. This is a common occurrence after long-term tooth loss, as the sinus expands over time at the expense of the bone. The need for and scope of the procedure is determined by measuring the bone height on a CT scan.

How sinus lift is performed at Mabel Clinic

The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic, using either the closed or open method, depending on the height of the missing bone. The doctor gently lifts the mucous membrane lining the floor of the sinus, and the resulting space is filled with a bone-substitute material. Under favourable conditions, implants are placed at the same time; in other cases, after the healing period. The entire process is digitally planned in advance, based on a tomographic scan.

After the procedure, swelling and a feeling of fullness may persist for a few days, and for about two weeks, you should avoid blowing your nose, sneezing with a closed mouth, diving, and flying. The new bone matures over a period of six to nine months. A sinus lift is a highly predictable, widely documented procedure that paves the way for permanent implant reconstruction.
